Zoo Tycoon Profile: Polar Bear

The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) is a large ursine species that lives in the Arctic Circle and the sub-Arctic regions. The polar bear is well adapted to life in the icy Arctic. A thick layer of blubber under its skin keeps it warm and makes it float more easily in water. Think fur covers its entire body, even its feet, providing traction in the snow. Its paws are webbed and powerful. Polar bears have been swimming in open water more 200 miles from land. The longest distance covered by any polar bear in swimming is about 427 miles. To catch its main prey, the ringed seal, a polar bear waits for the seal to surface at an open breathing hole. The polar bear may also stalk seals on the ice, slowly crawling to within 20 feet and then pouncing.

Social: With the exception of a mother with her cubs, polar bears are solitary. They only interact with each other to mate or fight over mates. Occasionally, male bears form strong bonds and spend time sleeping and playing together.
