Zoo Tycoon Profile: Common Waterbuck

The Common Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) is a large antelope found widely in sub-Saharan Africa. It is placed in the genus Kobus of the family Bovidae. The coat color varies from brown to grey. The long, spiral horns, present only on males. Waterbucks inhabit areas that are close to water in savanna grasslands, gallery forests, and riverine woodlands south of the Sahara. Such habitats not only provide year-round sustenance, but long grasses and watery places in which to hide from predators. Waterbucks must drink daily and always have a water source within their territory. They are good swimmers and readily wade into water and can, if needed, seek refuge from predators in deeper water.

Social: Herds of up to 30 animals are led by a large male.

Size: 70 to 93 inches in length. Males are 54 inches at the shoulder and weigh 437 to 578 lbs./ Females are 47 inches at the shoulder and weigh 355 to 472 lbs.
