The
Red Lechwe (
Kobus leche) is an medium-sized antelope found in wetlands of south central Africa and was introduced to
Australia. The color of the lechwe is chestnut with white underparts, throat, and facial markings. Males are darker than females. Red Lechwe has dark leg and body markings, and these markings vary in color, from black to red, and are noticeable between the different subspecies. Their hooves are adapted for swampy terrain. While lechwe does not have scent glands, their coats are greasy and have a distinct odor. These antelopes live in wetlands and marshy areas. They are usually found in light woodlands, floodplain grasslands, and water-meadows, around swamps and lagoons.
Diet: Red Lechwe browse on the lush green aquatic grasses.
Social: They gather in herds which can include many thousands of individuals. Herds are usually all of one sex, but during mating season they mix. Females and calves are usually found near wet areas as they depend on water. Males do not require as much water and usually stay far from water sources. Males compete for their territories only during the rut and the rest of the year they live in bachelor herds.
Size: 35 to 39 inches at the shoulder and weigh from 150 to 260 pounds.
