Zoo Tycoon Proile: Rear-Horned Baboon Tarantula

The African Rear-Horned Baboon Tarantula (Ceratogyrus darling), is a theraphosid spider from southern Africa, mainly Botswana and Lesotho. They are ash-gray, mud-brown to black. For spiders, tarantulas are enormous. They don't build webs but instead set traps to capture their prey or they hunt at night by sneaking up and attacking. Tarantulas paralyze their prey with venom. Digestive juices turn the victim into a soupy meal. When threatened, a tarantula uses its hind legs to scrape tiny hairs from its belly, sending them flying back toward the threat. The hairs sting and can cause a nasty rash or even death if inhaled.

Diet: Insects, mice and small lizards.

Size: 3 to 5 inches.
